Beyond The Spectrum

On December 7, Emporium Brazil Design Gallery captivated audiences with Beyond the Spectrum, an exhibition curated by Jade Matarazzo showcasing the transformative work of Brazilian artist Carlos Cesar Alves. Though Alves perceives the world solely in black, white, and gray, his art defied these limitations. His vibrant, color-saturated works burst with energy, standing in striking contrast to his stark black-and-white creations. Together, these dual expressions challenged conventional boundaries of sight and creativity, inviting viewers to rethink how they interpret the visual world.

Active since 2006, Alves has exhibited his work in over 160 shows worldwide, earning acclaim for his ability to transform visual limitations into boundless artistic possibilities. Beyond the Spectrum was more than an exhibition—it was a celebration of the endless potential of human vision and imagination.

Overlaying Labours by Dabus&Thibes

Overlaying Labours Exhibition Curated by the brilliant Oscar D’Ambrosio, the exhibition by the artist duo Cecilia Thibes and Fernanda Dabus, known as Dabus Thibes, took place on November 6 in our gallery. The show offered the public a profound exploration of materiality, perception, and symbolism, delving into a contemporary narrative rich in meaning. Each piece in the collection served as an invitation to introspection and an analysis of the connections between art and the world around us. The three-dimensionality of the works opened up infinite interpretative possibilities, challenging the boundaries of traditional perception. At the heart of the exhibition was the innovative use of repurposed chassis, combined with plexiglass, fabrics, and encaustic techniques, transforming each piece into a three-dimensional experience. The works go beyond visual contemplation, demanding active engagement from viewers to uncover the layers, textures, and implicit narratives. Color played a crucial role in the artists' work, drawing from the chromatic studies of Austrian philosopher Rudolf Steiner and Goethe's color theory. This approach integrates physical, spiritual, and intellectual, creating an aesthetic experience that transcends time and space. Titled 12 Labours of Hercules, another series presented during the exhibition was directly inspired by the twelve labors of Hercules, episodes from Greek mythology that symbolize overcoming personal challenges and achieving maturity. The duo translated this heroic journey into a series of works that transcend the limits of traditional art in both medium and technique. The result is a collection that expresses a profound connection to the abstract and contemporary art universe, where colors "come to life" and transform the visual journey into an emotional and symbolic experience. For those who had the chance to experience it, the exhibition was more than an encounter with art, it was an invitation to personal transformation and a rediscovery of the senses.

The exhibition was divided into three distinct series, each with its own identity, yet all interconnected by the artist's boldness and talent in exploring new dimensions and languages. Politics stands out for creating his works on three-dimensional surfaces, a unique feature that provides an immersive and unparalleled experience. With vibrant colors, complex forms, and pronounced depth, each piece invites the viewer into a universe that transcends the conventional boundaries of two-dimensional art. As visitors walked through the gallery, they were transported to a space where traditional notions of form and perspective were reimagined. The three-dimensionality of Politics' works offers a new way of interaction, creating plays of light and shadow that transform each piece with the viewer's movement.

Alessandra also celebrates the contribution of Sergio Rodrigues, considered "the father of Brazilian modern furniture," whose unique aesthetic combined comfort and ergonomics, reflecting the country's identity and laid-back lifestyle. Jorge Zalszupin is another highlight, known for his organic forms and contemporary lines, which integrated the architectural advances of Oscar Niemeyer, especially in the construction of Brasília.

The search for different shades of colors also characterizes a visual journey that poses, with each new work, questions about the possibilities of art as a way of expressing the feeling of being in the world.

Artists' Statement - In painting, according to anthroposophy, we enter the realm of color and form through experiences that allow us to know them not subjectively but objectively, entering the laws and phenomena of colors and form.

The study and use of these elements do not ensure artistic creation. It is the process, the action, which creates the work of art. Art is at the beginning and not at the end. It is a process, a path of knowledge and self-knowledge, observation and self-observation.

The method of artistic development that we will experience over these 6 modules is based on anthroposophy and the artistic creation of the great masters.

“It is What it is” – Luca Ewbank Solo Exhibition

His work involves the richness of the encounter of media, techniques, and ideas, paving the way for new trends and possibilities. Strongly influenced by Pop Art, the artist signals and tensions provocative and metaphorical issues related to mass culture, pop iconography, and urban environment.

The Emporium Brazil Design Gallery, during the Miami Design Week, unveiled the beautiful commemorative exhibition celebrating the 10-year career of the visual artist Gian Luca Ewbank entitled – “It is What it is”.

The showcased artworks bear witness to the artist´s evolution and creative journey, offering a glimpse into the various phases and inspirations that shaped his prolific career.

Gian Luca Ewbank experiments with new mediums and formats for his language. Graduated in Social Communication, the artist was born in São Paulo, Brazil in 1990.

His work involves the richness of the encounter of media, techniques, and ideas, paving the way for new trends and possibilities. Strongly influenced by Pop Art, the artist signals and tensions provocative and metaphorical issues related to mass culture, pop iconography, and urban environment.

The multiple character of the materials and the encounter between word and image are two mainstays of Gian Luca Ewbank’s poetics. Initially, one can notice this affection and persistence in labor and a fascination with different materialities. Apart from the pieces on canvas, this thought of juxtaposition and mixing of diverse elements expands into the space in the artist’s three-dimensional works.

It is relevant to perceive that the artist formulates works especially with the correlation of writing. He is explicitly enchanted by the mixture between message and appeal, transparency and presence, as well as the seductive and decodable scope that is located and navigates with skill.

The discourse has more connections with persistence and an uninterrupted fascination with the alchemy of creation, between material and concrete making, flanked by robust concepts to establish themselves amid such liquid and volatile times. Ewbank subverts logic and, through his catchy authorship, calls us to a critical position, which digests consumerism and the mass media activated in the arts of the 1960s, and helps to question and resignify direct concepts of this complex world today.
